What is a pH Neutral Cleaner?

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

There seems to be an endless supply of cleaning solutions. It could be as simple as water and elbow grease, hand-made formulas of dish soap and vinegar, or professional strength chemical cleaners.

Products are available to meet demands for dirt, grease, and grime removal – making our homes, stores, healthcare facilities, restaurants, factories, workshops, warehouses and more, shine! The question is, how do we find a superior way to clean without causing harm to ourselves, what we are cleaning, or the environment?

The answer lies in the pH! An abbreviation for potential hydrogen, pH ranks the acidity and alkalinity of a liquid solution. The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 considered neutral. Solutions which measure less than 7 are considered acidic. Greater than 7 is alkaline or basic. The growing market of neutral pH cleaners is generally considered in the 6 to 8 pH range.

Generally considered easier on people who use them than acidic or alkaline solutions, neutral solutions can be strong cleaners but present little or no acid or alkaline hazards. Acids are commonly used to break down water scale and rust. Alkaline cleaners dissolve carbon-based dirt. Both can be dangerous, harming skin, lungs, the digestive system, the item cleaned and the environment. Neutral pH cleaners, commonly known as green or biodegradable, are safer, but in the past considered not as effective.

Great strides have been made in recent years in formulating pH neutral cleaners. They are getting tougher on grease and grime, lifting dirt off a surface – as opposed to the dissolving action of acidic and alkaline cleaners.

Several companies have entered the growing field of highly effective neutral pH cleaners including Premalux with its Surge Industrial line of cleaners is a water-based neutral pH cleaning products including:
